10 Side Hustle Business Ideas for Writers

In this blog, I have pointed out 10 side hustle ideas for writers that can help boost our talent and start our business as a brand in our creative content writing. These 10 ideas are –

Variation of Writings where Writers can earn a handsome royalty amount.

1. Freelance Writing –

Freelancing is the most widely used side hustle for writers who want to earn extra income while fulfilling their passions. Everyone, from creatives to businesses and startups, prefers qualitative content writers as freelancers to boost their online presence. They want structured and well-written blogs, articles, social media posts, and newsletters.

  • It’s widely accepted because you are your own boss, which means you have flexibility in timings and deadlines, and can choose your own topic.
  • Fiverr, Upwork, LinkedIn, and Freelancer are a few platforms that support Freelancers and offer the best deals. Your own website cum portfolio can also attract clients.

2. Self-Publishing eBooks

Storytelling is a trend and has become a matter of passion and profession. If you have expertise in any niche, you can write your own Self-Publishing eBooks, which take minutes to upload to Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). It also provides the authority to make global connections.

  • You can start your own source of passive income and a royalty income for years, as each will be waiting to read your eBook on Amazon Kindle.
  • There’s no boudnation. You can start with a small eBook and soon write on niches with an audience, such as “How To” genres, fiction, and nonfiction.

3. Copywriting for Brands

There’s been a broad shift in content writing, and people are now shifting into copywriting, where you write persuasive content for companies in the form of landing pages, advertisements, email marketing campaign content, and product descriptions. Plenty of businesses in the market don’t have in-house copywriters, so you can be the one as a talented part-time or freelancer.

  • As Copywriting is in demand, it pays more than Content writing because, through copywriting, you boost objectives and conversations with your expertise.
  • To polish your skills, enroll in an online session, create an impactful portfolio, and pitch agencies and small businesses because Copywriting and Content Writing are two different things.

4. Blogging and Affiliate Marketing

Blogging is my writer’s niche and the best source of passive income in affiliate marketing. You can write blogs, build an audience, and get recognized as a thought leader. Once you gain traffic, you can monetize your blogs with sponsors and ads to earn a handsome income.

  • Blogging and Affiliate marketing give you recognition and long-term ownership of your brand and content.
  • You can start by finalizing your niche, such as travel or real estate, being consistent, and using SEO to optimize.

5. Ghostwriting for Others

If you are a new writer and want to improve your writing skills or write but have no time, you can ghostwrite for others. Ghostwriters write content that others want to publish but fail to do so.

  • Ghostwriting pays well most of the time, as you will be writing for other big and renowned writers on their behalf. Clients value quality and confidentiality.
  • Business books, Ghostwriting memories, LinkedIn articles, Blog posts, etc., are examples of Ghostwriting opportunities. You can become a profitable one if you adapt quickly.

6. Social Media Content Creation

One of the most fascinating side hustles, and one that I prefer, is social media content creation. Here, brands and companies need their content to be high-quality, engaging, concise, consistent, and to stand out. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Reels, etc. can be the best with catchy captions.

  • Despite being a hub, social media is hungry for content, and brands constantly look for writers to gain profit and stand firm against their competitors.
  • Start by offering packages to startups and small businesses, such as 15 monthly posts, then scale up later.

7. Scriptwriting for Videos and Podcasts

Nowadays, videos and podcasts are a trend that demands skilled and traffic-generating writers to write for them to engage their audience. YouTubers also have a high vacancy for experienced writers to entertain and structure their audience.

  • Scriptwriting allows you to flex your storytelling skills and convert your ideas into a story that people would love to watch and read. It also pays well if your script goes viral.
  • Some examples are YouTube scripts, podcasts, interviews, course content, etc.

8. Creating and Selling Online Courses

If you are a skilled and experienced writer, you can also create an online course that teaches others about a particular niche, such as how-to guides and to-do task lists. Udemy, Teachable, and Skillshare are a few structured courses started in this niche.

  • You can earn passive income through your courses while positioning yourself in your niche-oriented field.
  • You can start with “Techniques of Storytelling”, Freelancing for Beginners, etc.

9. Resume and LinkedIn Profile Writing

Resumes are now the base, and when job seekers fail to create one, you can help them by creating an exciting Resume and handling their LinkedIn profiles. You can also write creatively as a professional and an executive.

  • Resume writing has an ROI for clients, and they want their content to be premium, so they love to pay a premium for their writing.
  • Start with simple resumes and discounted LinkedIn writing, then build stronger content to promote your services.

10. Newsletter Writing and Monetization

Email newsletters are highly in demand as they target a large audience and attract them to your product and niche. Writers provide valuable content and insights in newsletters that act as a CTA for readers, sponsors, and affiliates.

  • Forget about algorithms, as through Newsletters, you can gain direct access to your audience.
  • Substack, ConvertKit, and Beehiv are a few that make it easy to launch and build your newsletter.
